Third Trimester: Ode to a Fetus

As I enter the third trimester
The wound begins to fester
And I can’t stand polyester
But I already miss you

Leaving the oh-so-cute stage
Flipping to the final page
Feeling not so brave
And I already miss you

Soon I’ll be having a whale of a time
No one will make me stand in line
I’ll take us all the way to month nine
But I already miss you

Your thumps, your burps, your hiccups, too
All the goofy things you do
Everything you are is new
And I already miss you

You, the fetus who lived inside
You, the zygote who loved to hide
You, who came with me for the ride
I already miss you

Normally when I write
The words carry a bite
But you woke me up at night
And I know I will miss you

I will carry you
Until I’m cold and blue
Worn down like an old shoe
But I will always miss you
